Biography

Mehdi Arami – Visual Artist & Performer

About Me
I am a multidisciplinary artist whose work spans painting, theater, and set design. Born in Iran, I pursued my passion for art under challenging political circumstances before relocating to the Netherlands — a country known for its artistic freedom and cultural diversity. In 2000, I graduated from the Constantijn Huygens Art Academy with a specialization in illustration.
My artistic practice is deeply rooted in themes of identity, displacement, and cultural heritage. Through a contemporary lens, I explore my Persian roots, creating visual and performative narratives that bridge tradition and modernity.
From 2003 to 2009, I founded and led the Parwaz Aram dance group, serving as choreographer and director. The group created spiritual and theatrical performances that were presented at prestigious venues such as the Museum Volkenkunde in Leiden, the World Forum in The Hague, and various museums, universities, and international cultural festivals. My work often merges visual and performing arts, offering immersive storytelling experiences that resonate across cultures.
In addition to my creative practice, I have dedicated many years to art education, teaching painting, sculpture, and illustration to students and community groups throughout the Netherlands. I have also studied under renowned artists such as Mahmoud Meraji and Hanibal Alkhas, which has significantly enriched my artistic perspective.
Over the years, I have participated in numerous exhibitions and cultural festivals worldwide, showcasing my work in galleries and museums internationally. Beyond individual projects, I continue to design and direct interdisciplinary performances that combine spiritual and theatrical elements, fostering collaboration and dialogue across artistic disciplines.
